The seven days of the week

The seven-day week is one of the most universal human conventions, used nearly everywhere on Earth despite having no astronomical basis. It is an inheritance from ancient Babylon, preserved across Jewish, Roman, Christian, Islamic, and secular calendars for over two millennia.

ISO №DayNamed after
1MondayThe Moon (Old English Mōnandæg)
2TuesdayTiw, Norse god of war
3WednesdayWoden / Odin
4ThursdayThor
5FridayFrigg / Freya
6SaturdaySaturn (Roman)
7SundayThe Sun

ISO day numbering

Under ISO 8601, days of the week are numbered 1 to 7 starting with Monday. This is different from the common US convention (where Sunday is often "day 1") and from JavaScript's Date.getDay() (where Sunday is 0 and Saturday is 6). Be careful when comparing day numbers across systems.

Finding what day a specific date falls on

Use the converter above to find what day any past or future date falls (or fell) on. Birthdays, historical events, project deadlines — pick a date and you'll get the weekday instantly.

Finding the day of the week for any date

There's a mental-math trick called Zeller's congruence that lets you find the day of the week for any date without a calendar. It's an odd parlor trick that works for Gregorian dates — but in practice, just use the converter above.

Working days vs calendar days

When someone says "five days from Thursday," they might mean:

  • Five calendar days — Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday
  • Five business days (skipping weekends) — Friday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Contracts, shipping estimates, and legal deadlines usually mean business days unless specified otherwise. "30 days" in a credit-card billing context usually means calendar days; "30 days" in a legal deadline often means business days in some jurisdictions. Always check.

Day counting across ISO, US, and calendar apps

Be careful when comparing "day-of-week numbers" across systems:

SystemMondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFridaySaturdaySunday
ISO 86011234567
JavaScript getDay()1234560
Excel WEEKDAY() (default)2345671
PHP date("w")1234560

When exchanging data between systems, convert to the ISO 8601 numbering before comparing.

What day of the week was I born?

Use the converter above to find out. Most people alive today were born between Monday and Friday (roughly 71% — because births are often induced or scheduled on weekdays). Saturday and Sunday births have declined as a proportion of total births since the 1990s due to scheduled deliveries and elective C-sections.

Fun with day-of-the-week statistics

  • The 13th of a month is slightly more likely to fall on a Friday than any other day — a consequence of the Gregorian calendar's 400-year leap cycle.
  • Over 400 years, Friday occurs 688 times as the 13th; Sunday and Wednesday occur 687 times; Monday and Tuesday 685 times; Thursday and Saturday 684 times.
  • The pattern 31 days → 31 days → 30 days means a given month often starts on a different day of the week each year.
