The Hijri calendar explained

The Hijri calendar is the official calendar of the Islamic world. It is a lunar calendar, meaning each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon. The name Hijri comes from the Hijra — the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE, which marks the start of the Islamic era (AH, Anno Hegirae).

Because a lunar year is about 354.37 days — roughly 11 days shorter than the solar year — the Hijri months drift steadily through the Gregorian seasons. A Muslim born on the 1st of Ramadan will see their Hijri birthday move forward by about 11 Gregorian days each year.

Reading today's Hijri date

Today's Hijri date is displayed at the top of this page in the standard form D Month YYYY AH. For example, 6 Dhu al-Qadah 1447 AH means "the 6th day of the month of Dhu al-Qadah in year 1447 of the Hijri era."

Hijri vs Islamic calendar — are they the same thing?

Yes. Hijri calendar and Islamic calendar refer to the same system. "Hijri" names it by its starting event (the Hijra); "Islamic" names it by the community that uses it. The months, days, and arithmetic are identical.

Why the Hijri date on this page might differ from your phone

If you compare today's Hijri date shown here against the date on your Islamic prayer-times app or the Saudi Arabian government website, you may occasionally see a one-day difference. There are three possible reasons:

  • Moon sighting vs calculation. Traditional Hijri dates begin at the sighting of the new crescent moon. This page uses the arithmetic (tabular) calendar, which averages out to the observational calendar but can be ±1 day on any given date.
  • Regional variation. The moon may be sighted earlier in some parts of the world than others. Pakistan and India often see the moon a day later than Saudi Arabia.
  • Day boundary at sunset. In Islamic tradition, the new day begins at maghrib (sunset), not midnight. If you check your phone after sunset but before midnight, you're already in the next Hijri day.

Hijri dates by country

Different Muslim-majority countries follow slightly different standards:

  • Saudi Arabia — the Umm al-Qura calendar, a semi-calculated standard based on new-moon visibility from Mecca.
  • Egypt — uses the tabular Islamic calendar for civil purposes.
  • Iran — uses the Persian (Solar Hijri) calendar for civil life and the Lunar Hijri for religious observances.
  • Pakistan — the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee determines Hijri dates by local moon sighting; sometimes one day behind Saudi Arabia.
  • Indonesia & Malaysia — follow local hisab (calculation) methods set by their respective religious authorities.
  • Turkey — the Diyanet publishes its own calculated Hijri calendar.

Converting Hijri birthdays

Because lunar years are about 11 days shorter than solar years, your Hijri birthday moves earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year. A person born in Ramadan might find their Hijri birthday lands in different Gregorian months across their lifetime. Use the converter above to find your Hijri birth date and to see when your next Hijri birthday falls.

Frequently asked questions

What does AH mean?
AH stands for Anno Hegirae — Latin for "in the year of the Hijra." It marks years from the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
How is the Hijri date calculated?
Two methods exist. The traditional method requires sighting the crescent moon at the end of each month. The arithmetic (tabular) method uses a fixed 30-year cycle with 11 leap years. Most online calculators, including this one, use the tabular method for consistency.
When is the next Islamic New Year?
The next 1 Muharram (Hijri New Year) will fall around mid-to-late June 2026, beginning the year 1448 AH. The exact date depends on moon sighting.
Is the Hijri calendar used for daily life?
In Saudi Arabia, Iran, and several other countries, the Hijri calendar is used alongside or instead of the Gregorian calendar for civil purposes. Globally, it is primarily used to determine religious dates.
