Which Hijri calendar does this use?
Our converter implements the tabular Islamic calendar — a purely arithmetic version that averages out to the observed lunar calendar over a 30-year cycle. It's the standard used in scientific computing, government systems, and most date-conversion tools.
Because true Islamic months begin with the local sighting of the new moon, a date calculated by our tool may differ by up to one day from the observed date in a particular country. Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar, for instance, uses semi-calculated moon-sighting data from Mecca.
Common conversions
| Hijri | Gregorian |
|---|---|
| 1 Muharram 1447 AH | 26 June 2025 |
| 1 Ramadan 1447 AH | 17 February 2026 |
| 1 Shawwal 1447 AH (Eid al-Fitr) | 19 March 2026 |

| 10 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH (Eid al-Adha) | 27 May 2026 |

Exact Gregorian dates for religious observances depend on moon sighting in each country and may vary by a day.
When would you need to convert Hijri to Gregorian?
- Religious scheduling in secular contexts — finding out what Gregorian date Ramadan, Eid, or Hajj will fall on this year for travel, business, or event planning.
- Historical research — Islamic-world historical documents are typically dated in AH; academic publications in English need AD/CE equivalents.
- Genealogy — family records from Middle Eastern, North African, or South Asian ancestors often use Hijri dating.
- Immigration documents — birth certificates from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, and others may be in Hijri; immigration requires Gregorian equivalents.
- International business — contracts with Gulf partners may reference dates in both calendars.

Accuracy note: tabular vs observational
Our converter uses the tabular Islamic calendar, which is the standard for computing and government purposes. However, for religious observances — particularly Ramadan and the two Eids — many countries defer to the observed new moon, which can produce a date one day different from our calculation.
In practice:
- For historical research and academic work, the tabular calendar is correct.
- For planning a religious observance in a specific country, check that country's official moon-sighting authority.
- Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, which can differ from the tabular calendar by ±1 day.
Why some conversions "feel wrong"
If you remember your Hijri birthday being on one date and our converter shows a different one, consider: different Islamic calendars were in use at different times. Also, Islamic days begin at sunset, so a child born after sunset on the Gregorian 15th is Hijri-born on the 16th's Hijri equivalent. Small discrepancies like this are normal.
