Gregorian to Hijri conversion

Converting a Gregorian (civil) date to the Islamic (Hijri) calendar is common for Muslims tracking religious observances, genealogists researching historical records from the Middle East and North Africa, and anyone working with Saudi Arabian government dates.

How the calculator works

We use the tabular Islamic calendar — a fixed 30-year cycle with 11 leap years that averages out to the true lunar calendar. This method is also called the "arithmetic" or "civil" Islamic calendar and is widely used in software and government.

Converting your birthday

Enter your Gregorian birth date in the converter above and select "Gregorian → Hijri" to see your Islamic birthday. Because lunar years are about 11 days shorter than solar years, your Hijri birthday will fall on a different Gregorian date each year.

Birthday converter: finding your Islamic birthday

Your Gregorian birthday falls on a different Hijri date every year — because the Hijri year is 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. Here's how to use this tool to find yours:

  1. Enter your Gregorian birth date in the converter above.
  2. Select "Gregorian → Hijri" from the direction dropdown.
  3. The Hijri date that comes back is your Islamic birthday.
  4. To find when your next Islamic birthday falls in the Gregorian calendar, enter that Hijri date and a target Hijri year, and select "Hijri → Gregorian."

Scheduling religious observances

If you need to plan around a specific Hijri event:

  • Ramadan — 1–30 Ramadan. Ramadan 1447 is approximately 17 February – 18 March 2026.
  • Eid al-Fitr — 1 Shawwal. Expected 19 March 2026.
  • Hajj — 8–13 Dhu al-Hijjah. Hajj 1447 is approximately 25–30 May 2026.
  • Eid al-Adha — 10 Dhu al-Hijjah. Expected 27 May 2026.
  • Islamic New Year — 1 Muharram. Expected 15 June 2026 (start of 1448 AH).

These dates are calculated using the tabular Islamic calendar. Local moon-sighting authorities may announce observance starting ±1 day.

Why do two Gregorian-to-Hijri converters sometimes disagree?

Different tools use different variants of the Islamic calendar:

  • Tabular (this tool) — arithmetic 30-year cycle, 11 leap years. Predictable.
  • Umm al-Qura — used by Saudi Arabia, based on calculated moon visibility at Mecca.
  • Observed — follows the actual local sighting of the crescent moon, announced month by month.

Any two of these can differ by ±1 day for any given date. All three are internally consistent and correct for their respective purposes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my Islamic birthday?
Enter your Gregorian birth date in the converter above with 'Gregorian → Hijri' selected. The tool will show your birth date in the Islamic calendar.
Does this calculator work for dates before Islam?
No — the Hijri era starts at 1 Muharram 1 AH (16 July 622 CE Julian). Earlier Gregorian dates cannot be meaningfully mapped to Hijri.
Why do my two Islamic calendars show different dates?
Different apps may use different Islamic calendar variants: the tabular calendar (arithmetic), the Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia's calculated-sighting variant), or locally observed calendars. A one-day variance is normal.
What's the difference between Hijri and Islamic calendar?
They mean the same thing. 'Hijri' names it by the Hijra (migration); 'Islamic' names it by the community that uses it. Same calendar, same arithmetic.
