What time was it before daylight savings?

Before daylight saving time (DST) began, the clock was one hour behind where it is now. So if it's currently 3:00 PM in a DST-observing zone, before DST started it would have been 2:00 PM.

When did daylight savings start this year?

In the United States, DST begins on the second Sunday of March at 2:00 AM local time — clocks "spring forward" to 3:00 AM. It ends on the first Sunday of November at 2:00 AM — clocks "fall back" to 1:00 AM.

2026 DST schedule (US)

  • DST starts: Sunday 8 March 2026, 2:00 AM → 3:00 AM
  • DST ends: Sunday 1 November 2026, 2:00 AM → 1:00 AM

2027 DST schedule (US)

  • DST starts: Sunday 14 March 2027, 2:00 AM → 3:00 AM
  • DST ends: Sunday 7 November 2027, 2:00 AM → 1:00 AM

Which US states don't observe DST?

Hawaii and most of Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) do not observe daylight saving time — they stay on standard time year-round. In Arizona, DST was eliminated in 1968 because summer evenings are already very hot; extra evening daylight would extend the discomfort.

Which countries observe DST?

  • United States, Canada, Mexico — most of North America observes DST (with local exceptions)
  • European Union — clocks change on the last Sunday of March (start) and last Sunday of October (end)
  • UK — same schedule as EU; called British Summer Time (BST)
  • Australia, New Zealand — southern hemisphere observance (October–April)
  • Most of Asia, Africa, and equatorial regions — do NOT observe DST

Why does DST exist?

Daylight saving time was first proposed by Benjamin Franklin (partially in jest) in 1784, formally adopted by Germany during World War I (1916) to conserve coal, then quickly copied by other countries. The US adopted it during both world wars and made it permanent (with variations) in 1966. The modern argument for DST is that shifting daylight to evening hours matches modern work schedules better than the natural solar cycle. The main argument against it is the twice-yearly disruption to sleep cycles and the well-documented spike in health incidents (heart attacks, car accidents) in the days following the spring transition.

Is DST being abolished?

Several US states have passed laws to abolish DST in favor of permanent standard or daylight time, but federal law currently prevents states from unilaterally moving to permanent DST. The Sunshine Protection Act (which would make DST permanent nationally) has passed the US Senate but not the House multiple times. The EU voted to abolish DST in 2019, but implementation has been delayed indefinitely.

Is daylight savings going away?
Not yet. The US Sunshine Protection Act has passed the Senate but not the House. The EU voted to end DST in 2019 but hasn't implemented it.
